5 Things to do on the Outskirts of Christchurch, NZ

1. Port Hills
These are those "mountains" you see in the distance when you are anywhere in Christchurch. However, once you get there, you realize they are just hills. Take the gondola or better yet, hike up to the top. It is about a 30min hike and is fairly steep but not too bad compared to the rest of New Zealand's hikes. Once you're at the top, you'll receive a stunning view of all of Christchurch and of Lyttleton Harbour on the other side. There is also a gift shop and a really good restaurant at the top.
PS - Sometimes the road at the top is open and you can drive up.

2. Lyttleton Harbour
View of Lyttleton Harbour from Port Hills
Just a short bus ride away is Lyttleton Harbour. If you're there on a Saturday, you can enjoy their popular farmer's market on London Street from 10am to 1pm. For dinner, consider eating at Fisherman's Wharf, a popular seafood spot right on the harbor. Just a warning, it might be a bit pricey for your average backpacker but it is worth it. If you have more time during the day, visit Quail Island which is an uninhabited nature reserve right in the middle of the Harbour. If you have the entire day and would like to go on a hike, take the ferry over to Diamond Harbour to hike Mt. Herbert. See here for official info on the hike. Just be sure when you're finding the start off of the main road, there will be an actual sign. Don't start hiking up someone's driveway like I did.

3. Sumner Beach
Cave Rock at Sumner Beach
Sumner is the most popular beach in the Christchurch area. Lay your towel down and enjoy a swim in the cool water or explore cave rock. Afterward, head over to the Beach Bar for a drink or take a short walk to town for some Fish n' Chips and ice cream.

4. Godley head
View from Godley Head
This historic peninsula is great for an easy day hike and amazing views. You'll take in some of the most incredible views of the bluest water just on the drive there but be careful since the road curves quite a bit and is cliffside. If you prefer hiking, you can actually hike from Sumner Beach to Godley head by taking Taylor's Mistake which is about 8km. Once you're there, you'll see all of its history such as the war bunkers that were made during WWII. This is also a great place to camp for the night.

5. New Brighton Beach
This beach is about the same distance from the city center as Sumner is but seems to be less touristy. Enjoy a walk down the pier or read a book at the library with ocean views. The water is a bit rougher than Sumner which makes it a great surfing spot.
